Hoy hoy CrabHeads!
Just a bit of Bye Week chitter chatter. First on the agenda, new venues. Right now we’re scheduled for the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at Folkie’s in Marion. It appears that we’ll also be doing the fourth Friday of the month in Poe at the Hi Ho Again! Sonny’s day job gives us Thursday and Friday nights for shows, So, we’re looking for new venues in the Richmond Indiana and Dayton Ohio areas to take up the remaining Thursdays and Fridays. If you’re in either of those neighborhoods, or you know someone who is and you know of a potential “Crab Racing” bar, let us know. And let the proprietor know what a great time they’re missing!
Like I said earlier. We are returning to POE! As I basked in the joy of that knowledge, I thought back to the twisted (and warped) path that meandered through the Greater Yodertucky region and got us here. I looked in the archives and got some dates together.
It appears that our first official show was a Non-Sanctioned Race in April of 2007 at the Three Kings in Hoagland. It looks like Bev won and I believe DJ Incredible Cathy was on the ones and twos. We returned to the Three Kings on November 2nd and started our Sanctioned run. Here’s a link to The CrabLine coverage of that night. Our stand lasted almost three years, ending on September 10th, 2010.
We then moved west to Poe and The Legendary Muldoon’s (conveniently across the street from the Poe V.F.D.). Our stint at The Legendary Muldoon’s was less than legendary, starting on November 12th and ending unceremoniously on March 4, four months later. Much has been said about the infamous “two girls and a barrel of pickles” incident that led to our demise, and we can only repeat what we’ve stated countless times before, “we didn’t realize that those were your shoes”.
Fortunately, a spot opened up the following month at Dick’s Hoagland Pizza Pub in Hoagland (that may seem redundant, but then you’ve probably never been to Hoagland). Unfortunately, that spot ended up being in the world’s largest solar oven, on the west side of Dick’s Hoagland Pizza Pub in Hoagland. Not wanting to find out what the winters would be like in “the box”, we ended the engagement on September 30, 2011, after six memorable shows.
January 2012 found us back across the street from the Poe V.F.D. at a familiar building under a new name- The Hi Ho Again. We started on the 5th and we haven’t looked back! Building on one of the most loyal bunch of drunks this side of the La Grange Legion, Friday Night Crab Racing at Poe has taken on an almost religious quality. I can’t count the number of times I’ve looked around the room and thought to myself, Jesus. Speaking for myself, djjj, The Hi Ho at Poe has always been my favorite road trip. I invite you to join us and find out why. Next show, Friday April 29th.
Feel free to add, reflect, recall, embellish, rebuke, deny, correct, detail, or illuminate on your Yodertucky memories in the comments below. And just to prove that you finished this post, use the secret phrase- “Pleasant Valley Pheasant Pluckers” when you sign up in Poe or Marion, and your Crab is free.
Pick ’em at 7:30, race ’em at 8:00. See you there!!
